Summary:

David Downton is one of the most important contemporary artists, and his work combines painting, drawing and fashion. David Downton has gained a reputation as one of the world’s best known fashion illustrators. His fashion sketches have been a strong factor in the resurgence of interest in illustration. David Downton studied at Canterbury and Wolverhampton and then moved to Brighton and began his illustration career. For 12 years he worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from advertising to illustrating and, occasionally, fashion. He become known as a fashion illustrator in 1996, when the Financial Times commissioned him to draw at the couture shows.

 


 

Latter, in 1998, he began working on a portfolio of very famous portraits of some of the world’s most beautiful women, like Paloma Picasso, Erin O’Connor, Catherine Deneuve, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Linda Evangelista and Dita Von Teese. His sketches are iconic for both the fashion industry and the art world, as they manage to highlight fashion’s glamor and decadence with just a few colors and brush lines. The art works powerful contrast yet stunning elegance have become the trade mark of David Downton’s art. The artist’s style manages to catch amazing details and character using just a few, very expressive brush lines. Most of the portraits and fashion illustrations only use black and white with a touch of vibrant and vivid color.
